I have written a successful book. I have spoken in front of corporate audiences across the world. I was a bankruptcy lawyer for one of the best firms in the world. I have advised senior leadership in state and local government on financial and management turnarounds. I have led nonprofits through transitions. I have created family offices and foundations from the ground up. I have helped individuals and organizations discover who they are, what they want to do, and how to get there. As the old story goes, I have sat at the bottom of a hole with someone and helped them climb out. Because I’ve been at the bottom of that hole, and I learned how to climb out.

I can help you.

Organizational Turnaround & Transformation

Change is constant. This is as true for organizations as it is for individuals. Growth, restructuring, and pivot points all require recognition and empathetic planning. Transformation requires a wholescale analysis of where the organization is, creative brainstorming around where it wants to go, and a plan to get there. Mission, finances, structure, and assets are just the top level of this analysis. Implementing change requires patience, kindness, and honest action. Let me help you with both the hard and the soft side of such moments.

Helped an organization recognize that it would fail barring a wholescale restructure of its revenue model. Worked with leadership to manage the business and human cost of this realization.

Worked with an organization to help it recognize that it’s primary mission had been achieved, formulate a new mission, and develop the team and financial model to carry it into the next stage of its life.

Interim Leadership

Sometimes it is easier to have an outsider come in to do the necessary but difficult work of moving you through a change. I have acted as interim executive, financial, and organizational leadership (usually not at the same time unless the organization is very small) while a longer search takes place for a permanent leader. The new employee comes in to a turn-key department or organization, ready for its new vision.

Led a nonprofit through a financial disaster. Worked to restructure all costs and employees so the new CEO came in to an organization with healthy policies and few assets so she could build her new team in her vision. Provided coaching to the new executive director on a regular basis.

Helped to start a foundation from the ground-up and acted as interim executive director while the mission, policies, and assets were built out.

Strategy

Do you just need support and advice? Do you just need three days to create a new mission and a new structure? Do you just need a complicated problem solved and want an outsider to help? Sometimes, especially with small family offices and foundations, an organization is just chafing and isn’t sure why. I can come in for a few days or a few months to help smooth the waters, develop a new strategy, and provide coaching to principals on how to create and work inside an organization that reflects who they are and what they want.

Led mission and policy development for a corporate foundation to reflect the desires of the founders to be both separate while complementary to the mission and vision of the corporation and funders.

Helped create a family office that reflected the vision and goals of each principal and a structure that allowed each personality to be dominant in their own area of expertise and complementary to the other members of the family.
